Where: Puerto Viejo, located in the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. This region of Costa Rica was founded by slaves fleeing from the slave trade in the Caribbean islands, and later populated by Europeans and Americans that follow the touristic boom of the country in the 1980's. This combination of the Afroculture and the European influence, make this region a rich mix between rastas, surfers, hippies, and tourists of all walks of life that came for a week and stayed for good. This area is famous for its challenging reef surfing (Salsa Brava), luscious rain forest and hospitality. There is a saying in Costa Rica that says “lo mejor de Limon es su gente” (the best of Limon is its people).

For our retreat, we will stay in private houses located only 2 miles from Puerto Viejo and only few feet from the beach. The houses are beautiful traditional Caribbean homes that can accommodate people in shared rooms, with the option for private rooms for couples. The main house is spacious and its lower level features an open area where you would be able to meditate with the background of the waves crashing on the beach only a few steps away. You can snorkel right there from the beach outside the house.  For transportation, we’ll be using a hired bus with a professional driver that we use year after year.

Yoga:   Over 2 hours of quality daily yoga and meditation with Sarah Brenes and Chenoa Lorenzo.  Sarah has led and hosted several yoga retreats and workshops for years in both the states and Costa Rica, and has logged thousands of classroom hours in yoga, philosophy, and meditation teachings.  Chenoa is the founder of Silver Lotus Yoga and a world traveler whose eclectic style of yoga has created a strong foundation in her teaching, and is also well-known within her community for her extensive knowlege in natural health and ayurveda.  Both teachers are certified Reiki masters and long-time friends.  Yoga will be mixed level and will be accommodated for new students as well as advanced. The themes of the practice will correlate to the other adventures planned and lead you on a contemplative retreat experience. Expect to develop and expand your yoga and meditation practice in a nurturing, loving environment.

Adventures:   Adventures will be led by Sarah's husband, Dr. Roberto Brenes (Figa), a native Costa Rican.  During his years as an undergrad in Costa Rica, Figa guided tours and worked with the National Park Service for over 4 years.  Figa is a professor in biology at Carroll University and has been leading groups of students and biologists in many regions of Central and South America for over 10 years. Figa is also a SCUBA dive master (PADI Certified), which will come in handy for anyone interested in snorkeling at the reef by the house.  Our guests from the past have truly enjoyed Figa’s interpretive hikes, history of the region, and fun and adventurous spirit!

Community cooking:  The Caribbean Coast offers many tropical fruits and herbs, some of the best healing turmeric, ginger and coconut milk in the world, amazing chocolate, and more sweet surprises.  As part of the experience, we will lovingly prepare and learn to cook healthy meals using ingredients that are locally available to us.  We will have the opportunity to go on foodie farm tours with permaculture farmers and experience the rich tastes of the Caribbean.  Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options can easily be met.  Juicing will be available.  We will also eat out on some occasions at authentic local restaurants and cafes.

Every day we will have an exciting adventure to see some of the most beautiful attractions of the area. So, come with us and enjoy this magical place when practicing yoga only few feet from the Caribbean Sea.

These are some of the adventures we are planning:

Gandoca Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge

There we will hike the trails of this this beautiful rainforest,  observe some animals and have some fun.

La Ceiba Primary Forest Release Site in Punta Uva

Just 3 miles from the house and the Jaguar Rescue Center, in the heart of the primary forest of the Caribbean is where La Ceiba has been lovingly built and maintained.  Encar and Sandro acquired the 49-hectare property several years ago, and it is now used as the release point for animals to be reintroduced to their natural habitat after their stay at the Jaguar Rescue Center.

The jungle truly comes alive at night, and on this magical 2 hour hike led by a professional guide, you will see and hear nocturnal animals that stay hidden during the day.  The sights and sounds of the jungle at night will surely be something you’ll never forget!

Waterfall hike

We will enjoy a nice hike in the forest that leads to a beautiful waterfall with a refreshing pool underneath.

Bribri Indigenous Reserve

The Bribri territory is an excellent way to spend the day experiencing the richness of the Pre-Columbian culture of Costa Rica in a cultural, anthropological, and natural immersion. The Bribri have lived off the cocoa plant that they still know so much about.  Here we will see how the women of the tribe create organic chocolate, and the traditional uses of cocoa, cinnamon, and other medicinal plants for natural remedies.

Optional Experiences:

Jaguar Rescue Center Tour*

Before the evening of the night hike in Punta Uva, we can take you to the Jaguar Rescue Center, which is a temporary or permanent home for ill, injured and orphaned animals.  With a focus on birds, reptiles, amphibians and small primates, the JRC provides veterinary services, round-the-clock care and comfort to animals that would otherwise be unable to survive in the rainforest or the sea of the Caribbean.  Touring the site is a great way you can support their daily effort to rescue, rehabilitate and protect the wild animals of Costa Rica and at the same time an unforgettable experience and unique chance to get a close look and learn about of their special guests.

Many other options*. If you want to do something more during our free time, like scuba diving in the reef, take a surf lesson, get a massage or visit a spa, tour and taste at a chocolate farm, sea kayaking in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean sea, zip line, horseback riding on the beach, go whitewater rafting on the Pacuare river (class III-IV), rent bicycles and tour through the streets and coastline of Puerto Viejo, or go into town to enjoy the beach shops, restaurants, and bars, we can arrange these services or tours lead by a professional company local of the area.  Unlike the aforementioned excursions, these additional options are not included in the cost of the retreat.

*Any activity with a * means this activity is not included in the retreat cost.  We can help arrange the transportation and contact the guides for these adventures, and it is possible that we can help arrange a group rate
